FAQs & Aftercare

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know — before, during, and after your appointment.

Before Your Appointment

How long should my hair be before waxing?

Hair needs to be at least 5mm long for wax to grip effectively — this is usually 2–3 weeks of growth after shaving. If hair is too short the wax cannot hold it; if it is longer than 1cm, it may be lightly trimmed before treatment at no extra charge. The sweet spot is around 5–10mm.

I have never had a Brazilian wax before — is that okay?

Absolutely. First-timers are always welcome at Bossa Wax Studio. Before your first appointment, Maria will take a few minutes to explain what will happen, check for any sensitivities, and answer any questions. Your comfort matters more than speed.

What should I avoid before my appointment?

Please avoid: fake tan 48 hours before waxing; heavy exfoliating products on the day; sunbathing or heat treatments in the 24 hours prior. Gently exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment to help the wax grip cleanly — just not on the day itself.

Can I come on my period?

Yes. You can absolutely attend an intimate waxing appointment during your period. Please wear a fresh tampon or menstrual cup before arriving. The treatment will proceed as normal.

Is waxing painful?

Waxing involves some discomfort — there is no way around that. A first Brazilian wax is typically the most intense; subsequent appointments become noticeably more comfortable as the hair follicle weakens. Maria’s Brazilian technique is designed to minimise discomfort. Most clients find it far more manageable than they expected.

Do I need a patch test?

A patch test is recommended if you have very sensitive skin, a known skin condition, or if you are using any topical medication (e.g. retinol, strong acids). Please mention this when booking so we can arrange a patch test 48 hours in advance.

I use retinol or anti-ageing products — can I still be waxed?

Clients using anti-ageing products or treatments (such as retinol/Retin-A) must discontinue use for at least 3 weeks prior to waxing. For safety reasons, waxing cannot be performed before this period. Even after 3 weeks, extra care should be taken and hot wax is recommended instead of strip wax.

If you are unsure whether your skincare routine affects your treatment, please contact us before booking.

During Your Appointment

Will it always be the same therapist?

Yes. Every treatment at Bossa Wax Studio is carried out personally by Maria. There is no handover, no junior therapist, no surprises. The same hands, the same technique, every appointment.

How long does a Brazilian or Hollywood wax take?

A Hollywood or Brazilian wax typically takes 25–35 minutes. Your first appointment may be slightly longer due to the pre-treatment consultation. Please allow 45 minutes for your first visit.

What happens at a first appointment?

You will be welcomed into the private studio. Maria will briefly go over your consultation form — checking for allergies, medications, or skin concerns — and explain the treatment. You will be given privacy to prepare. Aftercare advice is given at the end of every appointment.

After Your Appointment — Aftercare

What should I avoid after waxing?

For the first 24–48 hours after waxing, please avoid: heat (hot baths, sauna, steam room, sunbeds); tight synthetic clothing; exercise that causes heavy sweating; swimming pools or hot tubs; fake tan; heavy perfumed products on the waxed area.

How do I prevent ingrown hairs?

Begin gentle exfoliation from 3–4 days after your appointment. Use a soft exfoliating mitt or a gentle scrub 2–3 times per week to keep follicles clear. Keeping skin well-moisturised also helps. Ask Maria about the Ingrown Hair Treatment add-on if you are prone to ingrown hairs.

How often should I book?

For best results, aim to book every 4–6 weeks. Regular waxing on a consistent schedule weakens the hair follicle over time, which means less discomfort and finer regrowth.

My skin is red after the appointment — is that normal?

Yes, completely normal. Some redness and sensitivity immediately after waxing is expected and typically subsides within a few hours. If redness or irritation persists beyond 48 hours, contact us.
